18K Gold Vermeil — everything you need to know

If you've ever wondered why our jewelry costs more than other personalized jewelry online, this is the answer. Here's exactly what 18K Gold Vermeil is, how it compares, and what it means for the piece you're buying.

What is 18K Gold Vermeil?

Vermeil (pronounced ver-MAY) is a specific jewelry standard defined by the FTC: a thick layer of 18K gold electroplated over a base of .925 sterling silver. Both materials have to meet minimum standards — the gold must be at least 18 karats, and the base must be genuine sterling silver.

That means every piece of 18K Gold Vermeil jewelry contains two premium materials. The sterling silver base is hypoallergenic and valuable in its own right. The 18K gold layer is rich, warm, and thick enough to last through real, daily wear.

How is it different from regular gold-plated jewelry?

The difference comes down to two things: what's underneath the gold, and how thick the gold layer is.

Regular gold-plated

Brass or zinc base metal
Gold layer: 0.5 microns or less
Fades in weeks to months
Can cause skin reactions
No warranty

18K Gold Vermeil (ours)

925 Sterling Silver base
Gold layer: 2.5+ microns (5× thicker)
Lasts 2+ years with care
Hypoallergenic
2-year warranty included

The practical difference: regular gold-plated jewelry tarnishes quickly because the thin gold layer wears through to the base metal, which then oxidizes and can turn your skin green. Vermeil's thicker gold layer and sterling silver base mean neither of those things happens under normal wear.

Is 18K Gold Vermeil the same as gold-filled?

No — they're two different standards, and they're often confused. Here's how they differ:

Gold vermeil uses a sterling silver base with an electroplated 18K gold layer (2.5+ microns). The base metal is hypoallergenic and high quality, making it the better choice for anyone with sensitive skin or metal allergies.

Gold-filled uses a brass or base metal core that's mechanically bonded with a layer of gold. The gold content is higher by weight (typically 1/20th of the total), but the base metal is usually brass, which can be problematic for sensitive skin. Gold-filled pieces are generally more durable but less suitable for personalization and tend to look more yellow and heavy.

For personalized, finely detailed jewelry like name necklaces and birthstone pieces, Vermeil gives you the best combination of quality, finish, and value.

Why does it cost more than other personalized jewelry online?

Most personalized jewelry sold online — particularly at lower price points — uses brass or zinc bases with an ultra-thin gold coating. It looks identical in photos but fades within weeks to months of regular wear. The low price reflects the low cost of materials.

Our pieces use genuine sterling silver and a 2.5-micron 18K gold layer. Both materials cost significantly more. The craftsmanship involved in applying the personalization before plating (rather than after) also adds time and skill to each piece.

The result is jewelry that still looks beautiful two years from now — not something that turns dull before your next birthday. We believe that's worth paying for, which is why we also back every piece with a 2-year warranty.

How long will it last?

With proper care, 18K Gold Vermeil maintains its color and finish for 2+ years of regular daily wear. That's why we're confident enough to offer a 2-year warranty on every piece.

The main factors that shorten the life of any gold-coated jewelry are water, sweat, perfume, and harsh chemicals. If you remove your jewelry before showering, swimming, and working out — and store it in the pouch we include — it will look great for years.

For comparison, standard gold-plated jewelry typically lasts 2–12 months before visible fading, depending on how often it's worn and how it's cared for.

Can I wear it in the shower or swimming?

We recommend removing your 18K Gold Vermeil jewelry before showering, swimming, or submerging in water. While it's far more durable than regular gold plating, prolonged exposure to water — especially chlorinated pool water or saltwater — will gradually wear down the gold layer faster than normal use.

The same applies to sweating heavily. Salt in sweat is corrosive to gold coatings over time, so we suggest taking off your pieces before intense workouts.

If you want jewelry you can genuinely wear 24/7 in any conditions, our stainless steel range is the better choice — it's fully waterproof and tarnish-resistant by nature.

Is it safe for sensitive skin?

Yes. Because the base metal is .925 sterling silver — not brass, copper, or nickel alloys — our jewelry is hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin and metal allergies.

The most common cause of jewelry reactions is nickel, which is frequently found in brass-based jewelry. Sterling silver contains no nickel. This is one of the most important reasons we chose Vermeil over standard gold plating — we wanted a piece that anyone can wear comfortably.

If you have a known silver allergy (which is very rare), we'd recommend our stainless steel pieces instead, as 316L surgical stainless steel is considered one of the most hypoallergenic metals available.

Will the gold color fade or change over time?

With proper care, no — the color will stay rich and warm. The 2.5-micron gold layer is thick enough that normal daily wear won't noticeably affect it for years.

The color can fade prematurely if the piece is regularly exposed to water, perfume, lotion, sweat, or harsh cleaning products. These are the main enemies of any gold coating. To keep your piece looking its best:

Do: store in the anti-tarnish pouch we include, put jewelry on last (after perfume and lotion), polish gently with a soft dry cloth if needed.

Avoid: showering, swimming, and working out while wearing it. Never use jewelry cleaner or abrasive cloths — these strip the gold layer.

What's the difference between 14K and 18K in Vermeil?

The karat number tells you the purity of the gold in the coating. 18K gold is 75% pure gold, giving it a richer, warmer color. 14K gold is 58.3% pure and has a slightly lighter, cooler tone.

We use 18K specifically because it produces the deep, warm gold color that looks most luxurious — especially important for personalized pieces where the color of the metal is a central part of the gift.

18K is also the minimum standard recognized by the FTC for Vermeil. Any gold layer below 18K technically doesn't qualify as Vermeil — it's just gold plating, regardless of how it's marketed.

What if my piece tarnishes or loses its finish?

Every piece we sell is covered by our 2-year warranty. If your jewelry tarnishes or loses its finish under normal wear and care conditions within that period, contact us and we'll make it right.

For minor surface dullness (not fading or tarnishing), a gentle buff with a soft dry cloth is often enough to restore the shine. Avoid water-based cleaners or polishing cloths with chemicals — these do more harm than good on vermeil.
